Win Big in the Three-Minute Thesis Competition!

January 06, 2023

Register to compete by Jan. 31 and attend an optional 30-minute information session on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 3:30-4 p.m. via Zoom, led by Dr. Nathan Hitchens, Assistant Professor of Geography. Register for the information session here. Once registered to compete, the Graduate School will send instructions for participation in Preliminary Rounds on either Feb. 7 or Feb. 8.

If you are chosen as one of ten finalists, you will be invited to present your three-minute thesis in front of a live audience on February 23, 2023, in the Ball Brother’s Hospitality Suite in Emens Auditorium. The first-place winner of the 3MT competition will also represent Ball State at the MAGS (Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools) Conference in Chicago, IL on March 31, 2023. All expenses paid!

The first-place winner of the competition will receive $1,000. The second-place winner will receive $700. The third-place and People’s Choice winners will each receive $500. Prize money will be issued to the student's account.

Check out the BSU 3MT website, which includes videos from previous winners and this tutorial video that walks through tips and tricks to create a great presentation!

Eligibility requirements to compete are simple. Students must:

  • Be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program any time during the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Be working on an original project attached to a program requirement or class. This does not need to be a formal thesis or dissertation, but it does need to be based on a student's original work.
  • Have some preliminary data collected on their project by the time they compete.
