What Impact Does United Way Have on Our Community?

October 12, 2021

Heart of Indiana United Way is focused on transforming and improving the quality of life in the communities they serve. They work to help families more than just survive, they are committed to helping people THRIVE!

To better understand the impact United Way has, you first have to understand where Delaware County stands. According to data from indianaimpact.org, our students qualifying for free and reduced lunch increased by 10.7% in the last 12 years and our high school graduation rate decreased by 7.1% from 2019 to 2020. The poverty rate in Delaware County increased by 11.5% from 2009 to 2019, and one can only imagine how much the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation since this data was last collected. Would you believe that nearly 50% of families in our community are living in poverty, or just one disaster away from it?

Thankfully, United Way not only recognizes this great need within Delaware County, but actively works to improve these conditions every day! They encourage THRIVING families and adults by supporting basic needs, better jobs with family-sustaining wages, and building strong familial strength through financial stability, strong support networks, and healthy lifestyles. United Way supports THRIVING children to create brighter futures for the next generation by helping them reach their full potential, starting school ready for Kindergarten, and reading at grade level by 3rd Grade.
