VIA Character Strength Spotlight: Self-Regulation

June 29, 2020

Self-Regulation is one of 24 universal character strengths and in the virtue category of temperance. It involves regulating what one feels and does. It is like a muscle that can be strengthened through regular practice or exhausted with over exertion.

Use your self-regulation for an act of kindness. “When someone is expressing anger toward you, pause with a couple of slow breaths, instead of reaction with anger in return. See the humanness of the other person and that they are suffering.”

VIA character strengths are a family of positive personality traits reflected in our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They are basic building blocks of a flourishing life and serve as pathways to PERMA wellbeing.
