Using your BSU.edu email account on other sites

June 20, 2024

Using your bsu.edu email address and password to register and sign into other websites such as social media, banking, newsletters, etc. can put your Ball State information at risk if there is a data breach at any of those sites.  If someone else obtains your Ball State credentials, they have full access to your Ball State information such as your social security number, financial information, grades, and other personal data.

To avoid risking the loss of sensitive data, we would recommend the use of a personal email address, a secondary email, or a temporary email address for non-Ball State online activities.  Make sure you use unique passwords on each of those accounts. Creating unique credentials will help increase the security of your private information.

To see if your Ball State credentials have been compromised in a data breach, you may visit sites such as https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to check them.  If your Ball State credentials have been compromised, please change your Ball State password immediately.  To learn the Ball State Password Policy and how to change your password, please visit the following Knowledge Base article.

If you would like to learn more about protecting your sensitive information, please visit the Office of Information Security Services website.
