UPDATE: Migration from Box Online Storage to Microsoft OneDrive – Tentative Schedule

As previously communicated, Information Technology will be migrating all Ball State Box online storage accounts to Microsoft OneDrive. Unlimited online storage on OneDrive is available to all Ball State students, faculty, and staff as part of their Ball State Office 365 account.

In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, Information Technology is creating a plan to automatically migrate Box accounts to OneDrive accounts. The next steps in this plan are as follows:

Beginning Monday, May 9, 2021, we will no longer create any new Box accounts for any reason. Faculty should attempt to use links to OneDrive content (in Canvas, for example), rather than to Box content. If you would like help with Box/OneDrive and your courses, please contact the Division of Online and Strategic Learning at 765-285-1763.

We have begun migrating a few institutional folders from Box to OneDrive and will continue to schedule these migrations throughout the summer, completing them before the beginning of the 2021 Fall semester. If your college or administrative area is interested in scheduling your Box institutional folder as soon as possible, please submit a request to the Technology HelpDesk.

Individual Box accounts will also be migrated to OneDrive over the summer. Individual accounts will all be migrated generally at the same time, but we have not yet established a date for that migration. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

What do I need to do?

You will be notified in advance as to when your area’s Box institutional folder migration will take place. This migration can take a few hours to several days, depending on the size of the folder. During that time, you will still be able access your Box folders and files, but we highly encourage you to limit the activity on your Box account (new file creation/sharing, etc.), so the transition is as smooth as possible.

You will also be notified before we migrate personal Box folders as well and we encourage you to take the same precautions to ensure a smooth transition.

NOTE: It is very important you do not attempt to manually move an institutional/departmental folder from Box into OneDrive. Information Technology will move all institutional folders as they are scheduled.

Also, while Information Technology will do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition, there may be situations where the migration did do not go as smoothly as planned. It’s important to note that your original Box files and folders are not removed immediately after the migration occurs, so you can easily manage any files or folders that were not smoothly migrated during the automatic process.
