University Libraries Workshop - Evaluating Sources: Scholarly, Popular, and Otherwise

October 19, 2026
How do we know when a source is scholarly? Can we trust information found online? Join University Libraries as we examine what makes a source authoritative, reliable, useful, and relevant to our research. We will compare and contrast different types of sources, looking at item records in OneSearch and Libraries databases, and discuss popular websites like Wikipedia and Academia.edu.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the authority, currency, relevance, completeness, and bias of a given source.
  • Compare one source against another and reflect on how their own values, beliefs, and worldviews might predispose them to accept or reject a source.
  • Verify whether or not a source is scholarly based on its item record and publication process.
