This interactive exhibit positions the Underground Railroad as a powerful act of resistance against racial oppression, the forerunner to the more contemporary Civil Rights Movement. Through five-units developed by Ball State University students, “Journey to Freedom” chronicles the emergence of the Underground Railroad from the lengthy history of slavery in the United States; discusses the people, principles, routes, and mechanisms through which the railroad operated; and then briefly explores its legacy and contemporary implications. Special attention is given to the Underground Railroad’s operation in Indiana. Individuals, groups, and classes are welcome to this self-guided exhibit.
Our opportunities are open to any currently enrolled Ball State University student without regard to race, religion, color, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, genetic information, ethnicity, national origin or ancestry, age, protected veteran status, or other legally protected category.
