The Qualitative Research Interest Group Brown Bag Lunch Series presents Dr. Robert Phillips on Corpus Linguists

October 06, 2026
The Center for Middletown Studies Qualitative Research Interest Group invites you to join us for a discussion with Dr. Rob Phillips, Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology and Associate Professor of Anthropology, on October 22 at 12:30 in BB 221. The seminar will provide a brief, hands-on introduction to corpus linguistics and its potential applications in qualitative research. Phillips will explain how researchers can use collections of naturally occurring language, such as news articles, social media posts, interviews, or other texts, to identify patterns in language use and explore how people construct meaning, identity, and social categories. Using his research in Singapore and the UK as case studies, he will demonstrate how corpus-based methods can be combined with close qualitative analysis to investigate discourse, culture, and social change. The goal is to give participants a practical sense of what corpus linguistics can do, how it complements traditional qualitative approaches, and the tools and techniques they can incorporate into their own research. Join us in person in BB 221 or on Zoom. Register here for the Zoom session.
