Testing the effect of a virtual reality mindfulness induction on attentional control: An ERP study” [#1533211-1]

September 08, 2022

Hello,

You are invited to participate in a study titled “Testing the effect of a virtual reality mindfulness induction on attentional control: An ERP study” [#1533211-1] that examines the effect of a brief mindfulness exercise on brain activity during a task that involves active attention. In order to participate, you must be an adult between the ages of 18 and 65.

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an online survey that will ask about personality characteristics and mindfulness. The survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete.

Participation in the online survey also qualifies you for participation in a follow up study examining the neural processes associated with mindfulness, attention, and personality characteristics. This portion of the study will be completed in North Quad 069 upon appointment.  In this portion of the study, you will complete tasks of attention and participate in a brief virtual reality mindfulness exercise. EEG procedures will be used to examine brain activity. EEG works by recording the electrical activity of a person’s brain and involves a cap with electrodes being placed on your head prior to completion of the computerized task and mindfulness exercise. Brain activity will be recorded during these activities. Gel will be placed in holes in the cap and will get into your hair.  However, the gel is non-toxic and washes out easily with a shower.  You must be willing to have gel placed in your hair for the EEG portion of the study.

Overall, participants will be eligible for up to 2 hours of research credit total OR have an equal opportunity for one of four $25.00 Tango e-giftcards. Individuals enrolled in an undergraduate CPSY course will have the option to complete the survey portion of the study to receive .05 hours of research credit, and those participants who participate in the EEG portion of the study will be eligible for an additional 1.5 hours of research credit. Individuals may also participate for an opportunity to earn monetary compensation. There will be no financial compensation for completion of the survey portion of the study.

Directions regarding follow up participation are provided after completion of the survey.
