Summer course: statistics, language, and text analytics

February 11, 2020
Would you like to learn how to apply statistics to language? That is the focus of ENG 686 - Topics in Linguistics this summer (session I).

To understand how language works, we need to be able to collect and examine linguistic data. This course will explore how different linguistic processes can be quantitatively analyzed using the R language. The course will discuss data visualization and data analysis based on the examination of different linguistic phenomena in a series of published studies. We will explore how such studies were designed, how the data were presented and analyzed, and what conclusions were drawn from the data. We will focus primarily on studies in Psycholinguistics, Phonology, Phonetics, and Second Language Acquisition. At the end of the course we will also discuss text analytics, and how we can use R to better understand patterns found in text.

Required: some familiarity with linguistic analysis and basic stats.
