September 13, 2021

Hello,

I am seeking participants for a study examining the relationship between cultural attitudes and neural activity during a visual discrimination task.

Study Title: Neural Correlates of Cultural Attitudes among Hispanic/Latine Individuals

Study Purpose and Rationale

The purpose of this study is to examine cultural attitudes and brain activity during a visual discrimination task before and after a writing activity.

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and identify as Hispanic or Latine.

Persons who may have factors that may influence neurological activity (e.g., history of concussion) may be ineligible for the study. Additionally, individuals with a visual impairment that would prevent them from seeing the stimuli would also be ineligible.

Participation Procedures and Duration

The main study will be held in North Quad 067 and 069 and will take approximately 1-1½ hours of your time.

Prior to scheduling a data collection session in the lab, you will need to complete two prescreening measures online to determine your eligibility for the study. One questionnaire will assess relevant demographic and health characteristics along with factors that might influence your neurological activity (e.g. history of concussion, medications, history of anxiety). The other questionnaire will assess your attitudes and beliefs about the social groups you belong to.

If selected for the main experiment, you will complete a computerized task that involves engaging in a visual discrimination task work before and after completing a writing activity

Compensation

The prescreening measures are estimated to take 10-20 minutes to complete. No compensation is offered for the prescreening. Participants who qualify for the main study and present for the experimental task will earn $10 per hour for a maximum of $20. Participation up to one hour will earn $10 and participation over one hour will earn the participant $20. The main experiment is anticipated to take approximately 1-1½ hours.

This study has been reviewed and approved by the Ball State University IRB [1676337-1]
