Ball State students have an exciting opportunity to join the KIIS Netherlands Program (May 20 – June 17, 2026).
Courses Offered:
- Education and Democratic Citizenship in a Global Context: This course examines how schools shape democracy, civic identity, and social equity across different countries. Students compare U.S. and Dutch approaches to civic learning while engaging with local educators, NGOs, and civic institutions. Site visits include the Dutch Parliament, ProDemos, and organizations focused on youth democracy. By the end of the program, students will better understand how civic education can strengthen democratic participation in diverse societies.
- Comparative Foundations of Education: U.S. and the Netherlands: This course explores the cultural, historical, and philosophical foundations of education, using the Netherlands as a case study. Students investigate questions of equity, diversity, and innovation in schooling, with comparisons to U.S. systems. The course blends readings and discussion with experiential learning, including visits to schools, museums, and international research centers like the International Institute of Social Studies. Students develop a critical perspective on how educational systems influence citizenship, inclusion, and global awareness.
*Both courses can count for Ball State credit with approval.
