This seminar explores contemporary issues facing the education system in the 21st century. Students will learn about how the PreK-12 school system works, including issues of policy, technology, and school funding. Students will engage critically with topics such as educational equity, technology in education, policy reforms, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on learning. Through readings, discussions, and projects, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the nature of educational systems and policy in the PK-12 context.
This course introduces you to education as a system comprised of the inputs for educating school-aged students at the federal, state, and community levels. You will have the opportunity to discover and evaluate the myriad outcomes that influence the education system through the policy process, legislation, and community engagement. Develop a deeper understanding of the systems and policies informing education development, implementation, assessment, and change.
This course is perfect for anyone with an interest in education as a public service. No prerequisites required. All majors welcome. Interested in adding a minor? EDST 100 serves as a required course for the Minor in Educational Studies.
