For his special assigned leave presentation, Dr. Jeffrey Brackett (Dept. of Philosophy and Religious Studies) will have solo exhibition of his ink artwork at Gordy Fine Art and Framing (Muncie): Forgetting the Ox: Drawings by Jeff Brackett. Brackett’s mostly abstract images are made of lines that are balanced between being composed purposefully and meandering adventurously. Brackett compares his process to the Buddhist metaphor of Ox-herding where he works toward eliminating the distinction between himself and the art he makes. The central image is a triptych measuring 5x10 feet. Several other works, large and small, will be on display. The show will open at a reception on Thursday September 2 from 5:00 – 8:00pm. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will speak about his work at 6:15. He will return for a closing event on Saturday, September 25 from 1-3pm. The show will remain on view until Saturday October 2. The research project deployed religious studies’ theoretical lenses to examine the use of the term “spiritual” in writings by art professionals, with special attention to claims of Buddhist influence on modern western artists.
