The next event in the 2020-2021 Teachers College Dean's Lecture Series takes place on Thursday, February 4, from 4-5 p.m. with Dr. Ruth Jefferson's presentation: "Assigned Leave A La COVID-19: Time to Consider ‘Reading, Reflecting, and Remaining.’"

When COVID-19 made it necessary to rethink assigned leave goals, Dr. Ruth Jefferson turned to research projects that had been previously placed on hold. Join us as she shares data, insights, and findings from all three of these projects:

“Reading” – How 4th graders performed on the National Assessment for Educational Progress in 2017, looking at engagement factors and best practices associated with developing a love of reading in elementary classrooms.

“Reflecting” – Dr. Jefferson and two colleagues analyzed the effects of student reflections on teaching majors’ dispositions. Work on this project resulted in the submission of a manuscript to Teacher Education and Special Education fall 2020.

“Remaining” – Dr. Jefferson began the preparation of a manuscript that outlines the provision of the initial Youth Opportunity Center activities and the process of finding an appropriate path to sustaining those services to youth in the facility.

Dr. Ruth Jefferson holds many teaching and administrative certifications including the areas of reading, learning disabilities, mild disabilities, elementary education, and special education administration. She has conducted research primarily in the areas of Response to Intervention (RTI), evidence-based practices in reading, and at-risk youth, as well as issues related to sustainability, and higher education/community engagement.
