Transcending the grim realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, Adamu Chan's powerful documentary paints a poignant portrait of resilience and hope blossoming within the confines of San Quentin State Prison. Chan, formerly incarcerated himself, offers a unique insider's view delving into his own journey towards freedom, while simultaneously amplifying the voices of his community and their loved ones on both sides of the prison walls.
Viewers will see footage from within San Quentin; the decrepit buildings and towering walls of stone and steel, but within, the folks whose spirits and minds cannot be contained. Through letters, Chan shares his experiences about his work creating films from inside the San Quentin Media Center, and his community and colleagues of fellow journalists, filmmakers, and activists who are enacting abolitionist practices from within the prison walls.
Winner of Best Documentary Mid-Length at the 2023 San Francisco International Film Festival.
