Starting August 3, the ability to create new Classic Quizzes will be disabled in our Canvas environment. This does not affect any quizzes currently in your Canvas courses. Classic Quizzes will continue to work as they always have. Moving forward, however, all newly created quizzes will need to use the New Quiz tool.

Why this change?

  • New Quizzes was developed to address limitations in Classic Quizzes and is the tool Canvas will continue to develop and support long-term. It offers several improvements:
    • Item banks replace the traditional question bank, letting you store questions in a central location and reuse them across assessments. When you edit a question in the bank, it updates everywhere that question appears.
    • More question formats, supporting more varied and authentic assessments.
    • Improved analytics and accessibility, with more enhancements planned.

How the Teaching Innovation team can help:

  • Migrating Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes
  • Converting question banks into item banks
  • Designing assessments that work well in the new system
  • Exploring alternative assessment strategies where appropriate

If you'd like to start planning your migration or just want to learn more about New Quizzes, please reach out to the Teaching Innovation Team at strategiclrn@bsu.edu. Early adoption will make this transition much smoother.
