Ball State University is committed to digital accessibility. Planning for accessibility in your Canvas course is not only the right thing to do; applying accessibility best practices also meet requirements laid out by federal and state laws. Knowing where to begin can be challenging. Join Instructional Consultant Sue Husted in this studio event and discover techniques and tips to make your course more accessible.

In this two-hour studio, you will:
  • Recognize the Rich Content Editor features that improve readability
  • Recall techniques to author accessible Canvas content, including text-alternatives, text, links, and other page elements
  • Identify opportunities to improve usability and accessibility of links in Canvas pages and modules
  • Locate the Accessibility Checker in the Canvas Rich Content Editor
  • Curate resources to improve accessibility in documents not created in Canvas
Meaningful Feedback Studio: Three-Day Self-Paced Course & Live Zoom Webinars

Self-paced course and Zoom webinars: March 1, 2, and 3 (Monday-Wednesday)

This three-day, self-paced studio will demonstrate different areas of teacher feedback in Canvas and how students can leverage the feedback. You will be enrolled as a student in a Canvas course for the studio and work through several steps, broken down below by day. We will also host optional live Zoom sessions at 10 a.m. to answer questions and provide demonstrations. The links to the Zoom sessions will be posted in the Canvas course. If you cannot attend the live sessions, they will be recorded and made available in the course.

Studio Objectives:

  • Produce feedback in Canvas via text, an attached file, video, audio, annotations, and/or rubrics
  • Design practice quizzes that provide feedback to students
  • Design an assignment which incorporates Simcheck, a program that detects potential plagiarism
  • Design resources that will help guide students in reviewing instructor feedback

  • Setting up a quiz with questions from a question bank
  • Setting up a quiz with a question group linked to a question bank
  • Setting up a quiz with a question group to randomize quiz questions

Studio: Cultivate Community with Assigned Discussion Roles

Join online and strategic learning and your peers as we practice assigned discussion roles for any modality. Engaging in discussions with assigned roles cultivates thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking; the structure of roles builds confidence in articulating points with clarify and assures that all voices contribute equally. Together we will actively explore an engaging discussion system for online, asynchronous classes in Canvas and in-person classes or synchronous lectures in Zoom.

In this two-hour hands-on Studio in Zoom and Canvas resource course, you will:
  • Engage synchronously via Zoom in the main session and breakout rooms
  • Engage in discussions online in a Canvas course using assigned discussion roles, including conversation ‘starters,’ ‘provocateurs,’ and landscapers. Provocateurs will ‘provoke’ thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking. ‘Landscapers’ will synthesize the key points of the conversation.
