More Than a Word – Film

“An exploration of Native American-based mascots, especially the Washington R_dskins, and their impact on real-life attitudes, issues, and policies. Through interviews with scholars, tribal leaders, lawyers, policy experts, activists, and Washington R_dskins fans, the film explores the history of the slanderous term "redskin," and delves into cultural stereotypes of Native Americans and their relationship to history. Ultimately, the film argues for representations that honor and celebrate the humanity of Indigenous people.”

CODE is a monthly dialogue series designed to increase the awareness and cultural competency among faculty, staff, and students by exploring various dimensions of diversity and equity. This month’s CODE session will be about incidents of hate on campus. The presence of hate on campus can contribute to a hostile educational and workplace environment where students, faculty and staff may not feel secure and be their best selves. Join us for a discussion on ways to maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment while upholding the tenants of freedom of expression.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community, and culture beginning on December 26 and ending on January 1. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, whose goal was to establish a holiday that would facilitate African American goals of building a strong family, learning about African American history, and developing unity. Join us to learn more about Kwanzaa from Lecturer of Sociology, John Anderson, who will educate us on the holiday and the seven principles.
