Menard Speaker Series: Gen Z Housing Affordability

Tu., Sept. 10 • 5 p.m. • WB 144

Dr. Hamilton will address the link between local zoning rules and other policies that constrain the supply of new housing. These rules are not only causing housing affordability problems, but they’re also preventing many people from living in the places where their best economic opportunities are located. Finally, she will address recent reforms to zoning, including some that have been proven to deliver large increases in new housing.

Emily Hamilton is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Urbanity Project at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Her research focuses on urban economics and land-use policy. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. Dr. Hamilton has testified before several state legislatures as well as the U.S. House of Representatives. Hamilton serves on the Advisory Boards of Up for Growth and Cityscape, a journal published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Presented by the Institute for the Study of Political Economy. The Institute for the Study of Political Economy (ISPE) approaches the study of political economy as an analysis of governance. We examine what it means to have good public and private governance. We analyze which institutions and institutional rules are likely to lead to good governance, and how governance – good and bad — impacts outcomes. We are particularly interested in wealth and income, economic growth, health, freedom and liberty, and quality of life in the American Midwest. In order to positively impact outcomes, we communicate the lessons learned from rigorous academic analysis to students, citizens at large, private organization leadership, and elected and appointed officials.
