Looking for a great major? Urban planners help communities thrive. New class provides an easy spring entry option to interested students.

November 01, 2022

You can earn a Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development degree and help cities, towns, and neighborhoods become more vibrant, more resilient, and more accessible to all.

A new spring class in the Department of Urban Planning will serve as your entry point into this exciting major and ultimately a meaningful and impactful career. Maybe you’ve considered urban planning previously but were concerned about the time needed to complete the first-year classes in the College of Architecture and Planning. Our new alternative entry class, PLAN 498 Introduction to Physical Planning Processes, along with PLAN 100 Introduction to Urban Planning, now act as a second pathway into the Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development degree.

To join urban planning this spring, sign up for:

  • Intro to Physical Planning Processes MWF 1-5 p.m. (six credit hours) CRN 45127
  • Intro to Urban Planning TR 2-2:50 (two credit hours) CRN 25746

You will learn how planners think, what questions they ask, how they gather information, and how they make decisions. You’ll learn about mapping, sketching, data analysis, and community engagement as well.

Beginning next fall, you’ll take studio classes that will build your skills, learn the history and theory of planning, and hone your abilities to understand big problems and to build consensus. Before your final year of study, you’ll prepare a portfolio of your work and complete an internship, ensuring you graduate job ready.

The job outlook for planners is strong, and nearly 90 percent of our grads are working in the field one year after graduation. Nationwide, median pay is $78,000.
