Lighting Effect on Children with Autism: Participants Needed (CHILDREN WITH AUTISM & SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS)

PHASE 1: CHILDREN WITH AUTISM as participants (HEDR lab)

Dr. Shireen Kanakri and PhD researcher Merve Kavaz are looking for participants with autism who are between the ages of 5 to 11. The effect of lighting will be tested by different setting of colors. Therefore, it will help to architect how light and color is affecting children with autism. You can check the past works of Health and Environmental Design Lab from the link below.

Participation Procedures and Duration

Parents can accompany while children are participating to the test. In the setting, there are different color of lighting and under these color of lighting children will play game or do some task. By this way, behavior of children will be observed by researcher. Lighting in lab is controlled, also the environment is acoustically insulated. So, the participants will not have affected negatively. Research can take 60 to 90 minutes.

PHASE 2: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS as participants (ONLINE SURVEY)

The purpose of this study is to measure the effect of school design on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While measuring, it is important to get teachers’ idea. This is because, teachers are active observers of children with autism. Therefore, by the teachers’ evaluation about school design, more appropriate educational environments can be provided by interior architects and designers.

Participation Procedures and Duration

Using Qualtrics, you will answer a short series of questions. First part of survey includes questions that depend on 5 point Likert Scale. Therefore, your evaluation is needed on that part. Other part of survey requires yes/no answers. In the last question, you need to share your idea to provide better environments for children with autism.

Your involvement will be no longer than 25 minutes.
