On Thursday, October 10, the David Owsley Museum of Art presents Dr. Melanie Anne Herzog in a free public lecture related to DOMA's current special exhibition. Herzog's talk "From a Necessity Within My People: The Art of Elizabeth Catlett" will explore the artist's life, her dedication to the expressive potential of form in her prints and sculptures, and her enduring artistic legacy. This event is part of Ball State's Arts Alive Series presented by the College of Fine Arts. The museum is hosting a 5:00p.m. reception to provide visitors with an opportunity to view the exhibition prior to the 6:00p.m. talk in Recital Hall.

On view through December 20, 2024, the special exhibition The Art of Elizabeth Catlett from the Collection of Samella Lewis features a selection of prints, sculptures, and paintings by one of the most important artists of the 20th century. A leading feminist and political voice in art and social justice, Catlett devoted her career of more than 60 years to expressing critical ideas in powerful visual form both in the United States of America and in her adopted country of Mexico.

Mark your calendar for another upcoming event related to the exhibition: a November 12 screening of "Standing Strong: Elizabeth Catlett" at Pruis Hall will include a Q&A with the filmmakers from New Mile Media Arts. These events—and the exhibition—are open to the public with no admission fee, and students are particularly encouraged to attend. Visit bsu.edu/doma for more information or to contact museum staff.
