Join the Department of History for the upcoming Sharon Seager Lecture in Women's and Gender History by Dr. Sidra Lawrence of Bowling Green State University. Dr. Lawrence's talk is entitled "Vulnerable Listening: Reflections on the Possibilities of Empathetic Encounter" and will focus on the ways sound and music in Dagara communities in Ghana and Burkina Faso shape feminist practices.
We’ll explore how everyday sounds—like gossip, laughter, and ululating—build community, foster creative agency, and challenge traditional social norms. This talk will also consider how expansive listening practices can be integrated into interdisciplinary research to create ethical and empathetic human connections across cultures.
The talk will take place at the L. A. Pittenger Student Center on Monday, October 28th at 4:00 in Cardinal Hall B and will be followed by a reception.
