Learn Spanish for the Health Professions!

November 01, 2023

Do you have plans for a career in medicine? Are you interested in learning languages, or developing a new skill that can increase the quality of care you can provide to your future patients? Take Spanish 101 or 102 for Health!

These beginner level Spanish courses will be offered in a hybrid format Spring 2024, M/W/F from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. These courses are in-person on Mondays and Wednesdays with virtual participation on Fridays to better accommodate the busy schedules of our students pursuing careers in medicine. Adam Ballart, a certified medical interpreter (CMI) in Spanish, and Dr. Chin-Sook Pak will teach these courses.

Did you know that Hispanic populations in the US experience considerable disparity in the quality of medical care that they receive? A major contributor to this problem is the lack of Spanish-speaking physicians in the workforce.

An article published this year by the Association of American Medical Colleges, titled "The United States needs more Spanish-speaking physicians," highlights the extent and impact of this issue. To learn more, you can read the article here.

If you're still undecided, consider this: Spanish language skills don't just help with health outcomes in Hispanic populations, they can also make your applications to jobs, medical school, and other post-baccalaureate opportunities more competitive, in addition to opening the door to a myriad of connections with Spanish-speakers all over the world.
