Join the inaugural event for the Ball State AAPI Affinity Group, May 20, 12:30 pm-1:30 pm for a presentation on “Yellow Peril” or “Model Minority”? Past Adversities, Present Challenges, and Future Possibilities of the AAPI Community

For Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, join Dr. Fang Gong, Sociology, Dr. Jun Xu, Sociology, and Dr. Mengxi Zhang, Nutrition and Health Science for a brief overview of the past adversities and present challenges of the AAPI community. They will first introduce the sociodemographic characteristics of the AAPI, then review a few watershed events and the passage of legal acts that have had long-lasting adverse effects, and finally discuss the origins and implications of the “Yellow Peril” and the “model minority” labels. Additional information will be provided regarding the newly established Ball State AAPI Affinity Group.

For context, it is suggested that you view the video PBS documentary Asian Americans: Breaking Through beforehand, but it is not required.
