Introducing Summer-in: A New Way to Teach Abroad

April 23, 2026

The Study Abroad Office is launching a new faculty-led program model: Summer-in—a streamlined, centrally managed way to teach abroad.

Built as an offshoot of BSU-in, Summer-in allows faculty to focus on teaching while our office manages program logistics, including housing, travel coordination, budgeting, and on-site support.

What is Summer-in?
Summer-in is a shared-location, cohort-based summer program model in which:

  • The Study Abroad Office develops and manages the program infrastructure
  • Faculty contribute by offering courses that are intentionally enhanced by the location
  • This model is designed to be affordable, scalable, and low-burden for faculty, while maintaining strong academic quality and student engagement.

Launching Summer-in: First Location (Summer 2027)
The inaugural Summer-in program will take place in Dublin, Ireland.

  • Tentative dates: May 2–22, 2027
  • Shared student cohort (students enroll in just one course)
  • Up to six BSU courses offered

Faculty Role
Faculty will coordinate with their department and college leadership to identify and propose a course aligned with the program location. The course will be taught on location in Dublin (will have a classroom) and will offer some in-town field trips that use location to enhance learning.

Faculty Support
Summer-in programs are designed to be affordable and streamlined, with support for:

  • Airfare, housing, and ground transportation
  • A modest stipend toward meals and incidentals
  • A small budget for course-related local field experiences
  • Faculty are compensated according to standard university policies for summer/supplemental teaching
  • On-site support for students and faculty is provided by the international partner and staff from BSU Study Abroad Office.

How to Participate
Faculty interested in Summer-in should first discuss participation with their department chair and college leadership. More information and the link to the interest form can be found on the faculty page of the study abroad website.

  • Interest form open: June–August 2026
  • Department approval required prior to form submission
  • Final course selection made by the Study Abroad Office upon approval of the college
  • Because space is limited, priority will be given to courses with strong enrollment potential, clear alignment with the location, and strong unit support.
