Interested in Health Research? Join BSU alumnus, Dr. Scott Engel, for his presentation on data collection in patients with eating disorders.

March 13, 2025

Sponsored Projects Administration is pleased to invite the campus community to attend a guest lecture by Dr. Scott Engel, titled, “The Application of Momentary Data Collection to the Study of Obesity, Eating Disorders, and Bariatric Surgery.”

Friday, March 21 ~ 2:00PM – 3:30PM
Multicultural Center, Multipurpose Room
All are welcome.
A reception will follow the talk.

The collection of momentary data, or momentary time sampling, to analyze patient behavior allows researchers to avoid or minimize many research limitations associated with more traditional forms of assessment. The Engel research team has applied momentary data collection to measure behavior, cognition, and affect in the moment through observation, rather than by continuously monitoring behavior.

In this talk Dr. Engel will discuss some of the benefits of using momentary data collection and provide a brief overview of recently collected data samples from individuals with obesity, eating disorders, and those who have had bariatric surgery.

Scott Engel, Ph.D., is a research scientist and Director of the Center for Biobehavioral Research at Sanford Research in Minnesota. Engel earned his MA in Clinical Psychology from Ball State University in 1998, and decided to focus his career on research. After completing a PhD at North Dakota State University, Engel became a research scientist in 2005 following a successful postdoctoral fellowship at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute. In 2016, Engel became the Director of Behavioral Research, and in 2022, was appointed Director of the Center for Biobehavioral Research.

Dr. Engel and his research team have successfully obtained sponsored projects funding for their research lab, primarily through grants at the National Institutes of Health. In the Fall of 2024, they received a $4.25 million grant to investigate the relationship between metabolic and bariatric surgery and post-operative hazardous alcohol use.

As a recipient of national funding, Dr. Engel will welcome questions about obtaining research funding, as well as additional questions about his research.

To ensure we have adequate refreshments, please RSVP to let us know you’ll be attending.
