“Exergames and Their Capacity to Influence Active Lifestyles”   

Study Purpose and Rationale  
The aim of this study is to examine the effects of storytelling used in a gamified mobile application to influence an exercise routine. It is hypothesized that the app Zombie’s Run! will positively affect mediating variables, such as enjoyment, autonomy, competence, immersion, and self-efficacy; which in turn would result in motivation to increase physical activity habits. 

Who?

  • To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and identify as a healthy adult between the ages of 18 to 65.
    A smart phone is also needed for this study, and you will be asked to download and use a free mobile app.
    You are not eligible for this study if:You currently exercise at least three times a week.
    You have medical factors that have caused a medical doctor to advise you against engaging in any physical activity.

What?

  • Participants will be asked to complete a Qualtrics pre-survey that will take about 15 minutes to complete. Then, candidates will be asked to walk or jog for 20 minutes, three times a week for a total of four weeks. An exercise log will be provided, and each participant will be asked to complete the log each time they exercise. 
  • Participants while be asked to walk or jog once each week while listening to a story using the free mobile app Zombies, Run!  At the end of the four weeks, participants will be asked to respond to a Qualtrics post-survey that will take about 20 minutes to complete. They will also be asked to participate in a 20-minute interview.  
  • Participation in this study is voluntary, and participants have the right to stop the study at any time. 
    No form of compensation is being offered for participating in this study.
