Please join Ball State Philosophy Club on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, for a guest lecture by Dr. Myron Jackson (Besl Chair of Ethics/Religion and Society at Xavier University) titled “Graceless in Defeat: On the Ethical Perils of Dog Whistlin’ and Code-Switchin.’”
Talk Description: Can we avoid abusing ourselves and others in a time of nocturnal democracy and deregulated identities? How can we overcome the tribalism/cosmopolitanism divide or understand what it means to be stranded between multiculturalism and resegregation? This talk will explore the moral failures underlying appropriation and assimilationist frameworks, while advancing a philosophy of cultural adoption. In the midst of polyethnic peoples and multi-local places, cultural meanings and values can best be interpreted and respectfully understood through an openness to family resemblances.
