Get Involved with Invasive Species Management in Delaware County

February 26, 2020
Delaware County is forming a CISMA and WANTS YOU to get involved!

A CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area) is a local group or partnership of people who collectively manage the problem of invasive species spreading across the landscape. CISMAs operate by engaging local interests and addressing invasive species issues across various land ownership. Delaware County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), Purdue Extension Service, Red-tail Land Conservancy, Ball State Field Station and various other organizations in Delaware County have started coming together to form a CISMA, and they want you to join them. For more information about CISMAs throughout Indiana, visit http://www.sicim.info/cismas.

The Delaware county group will be hosting an informational meeting on February 26th at 5:30 PM in the Indiana Room at the Minnetrista Gathering Place, 1200 N. Minnetrista Pkwy Muncie. This meeting will answer the questions of what an invasive species is, why they are a problem and how you can get involved and make a difference. The meeting is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated but not required; please call or text Liz at 765-277-1415 or email at liz@sicim.info.

Another date to remember is Saturday May 16th, 10am-noon, when this group will be hosting a “Weed Wrangle” event at Dutro-Ernst Woods. A Weed Wrangle is a one-day volunteer event to manage invasive plant species in our public parks and green spaces. Assisted by Weed Wrangle Indiana® experts, participants will learn to identify, remove, and maintain an area free of harmful (invasive) plants, and why native plants are a crucial component of our natural areas. Together we can improve the green spaces around us!
