From the Agency to the Museum Floor: What Two Summer Externships Taught Me About Preparing Students for the Workplace
November 12
3 p.m. in LB 102A
Session Description: Mary Moore, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies at Ball State University, received a Faculty Externship award through the BSU Career Center this past summer. She spent her externship at two very different organizations: Hirons, a full-service advertising, marketing, and public relations agency in Indianapolis, and the Muncie Children’s Museum. Through interviews with staff, building tours, and time spent at events, she gained a firsthand look at how these workplaces operate and what they need from the people they hire. In this presentation, she’ll share what she learned and what it could mean for how Ball State prepares students across every major.
Mary directs COMM 210 the foundational Public Speaking course. With roughly 25 years in higher education, she has taught nearly 30 different courses at institutions ranging from community colleges to research universities.
