All Ball State courses will be held online Friday, Sept. 4, as the University responds to ongoing issues with its geothermal heating and cooling system. University buildings, including residence halls, will remain open and operational. Employees who can work remotely without disrupting normal operations may do so with supervisor approval; essential employees must report to work in person.
The decision follows three underground ruptures in the geothermal system within less than 24 hours. The latest rupture occurred Thursday evening along Riverside Avenue near the south entrance of Teachers College and is expected to affect the University’s ability to consistently cool buildings. Water from the line mixed with insulation material from the piping, but the mixture is non-hazardous. The campus community is asked to avoid the area while cleanup continues.
Facilities, Planning and Management is working to determine the cause of the ruptures and continues to monitor the system.
