CLOSING THE MEAL GAP: Understanding Food Insecurity in the Land of Plenty

Food insecurity is defined simply as not enough access to sufficient, quality, food to meet one's basic needs. In the United States alone we know that 1 in 8 people face hunger every day, including more than
12 million children and nearly one-third of college students. All this happening in one of the most abundant food producing countries in the world. Food insecurity is associated with many health-related issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity and depression, costing the United States billions in healthcare dollars. But what can be done? During this interactive presentation we will dip our toes into the community food experience, learn from those directly impacted by hunger and food insecurity and walk away with support solutions to affect change in the health of our community. Let’s close the meal gap.
