Fly Well: Water Safety

June 11, 2026

Summer is a great time to enjoy pools, lakes, rivers, and other water activities. Whether you're planning a family vacation, spending time at the pool, or relaxing by the lake, a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe.

The American Red Cross recommends practicing water competency by:

  • Understanding water risks and your swimming abilities
  • Swimming with a buddy whenever possible
  • Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket that fits properly when boating
  • Providing close, undistracted supervision of children near water
  • Knowing how to respond in a water emergency

Taking these steps can help make water activities safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Learn more about water safety and summer swimming tips from the American Red Cross on their Water Safety webpage. Lifejackets and other equipment can be rented from the Outdoor Pursuits Rental Center at Ball State.
