Fly Well: Stay Safe While Mowing This Summer

July 09, 2026

Warmer weather means more time outdoors caring for your lawn. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and keep you and your loved ones safe all season long.

Before you mow:

  • Walk your yard and remove sticks, rocks, toys, and other objects that could become dangerous projectiles.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and eye and hearing protection.
  • Keep children and pets indoors to help prevent accidents and injuries.

While mowing:

  • Stay focused and avoid distractions, including using your phone.
  • Never remove grass clippings or unclog the mower while the engine is running. Turn it off and wait until the blades have completely stopped before clearing debris.
  • Use extra caution on hills and slopes, and avoid pulling a mower backward whenever possible.
  • If you're using a riding mower, never allow passengers, especially children.

A few extra minutes of preparation can go a long way toward preventing injuries and helping everyone enjoy a safe summer.
