Hello,
You are invited to participate in a study titled “The influence of perfectionism and goal orientation on athletes’ Error-Related Negativity” [#1859450-5] that examines the influence of perfectionism and goal orientation on athlete’s neural brainwaves during completion of a computer task. In order to participate, you must be at least 18 years old and currently on a Ball State University university-sanctioned NCAA Division I athletics team roster, or participating in a Ball State University Club Sport, or a BSU student who previously participated in high school athletics.
If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an online survey that will ask about demographics (including sport team identification), some health information that may be influence neurological activity (e.g., history of concussion), and measures assessing certain personality traits. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
Participation in the online survey also qualifies you for participation in a follow up study examining the influence of perfectionism and goal orientation on neural processes. This portion of the study will be completed in North Quad room 069 upon appointment. In this portion of the study, you will complete computer tasks involving arrows and pressing buttons. EEG procedures will be used to examine brain activity. EEG works by recording the electrical activity of a person’s brain and involves a cap with electrodes being placed on your head prior to completion of the computerized task and mindfulness exercise. Brain activity will be recorded during these activities. Gel will be placed in holes in the cap and will get into your hair. However, the gel is non-toxic and washes out easily with a shower. You must be willing to have gel placed in your hair for the EEG portion of the study.
The study is anticipated to take approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. Participants who qualify for and participate in the main study will earn $20.00 upon completion of the main study. Participants who are not able to complete the study due to technical malfunction, who withdraw or are withdrawn by the researcher will be given $10.00. Participants who ask that their data be destroyed will still earn financial compensation commensurate with their time in the study as described above. For those enrolled in an undergraduate CPSY course seeking research credit hours, 1.5 hours of research credits will be granted following completion of the in-person laboratory portion of the study.
