As educators, we feel a connection to buzzwords around student success when they capture the spirit of our intent. Ultimately, the purpose of many higher ed buzzwords is to help us better understand the student as a real person. However, meaning can be lost along the way as we try to capture the essence of complex ideas and experiences, creating the opposite effect from our humanizing intent. This impacts the campus culture, the student experience, and our own feelings about the work. Using the language of student success as an anchor point, we'll examine the intent behind those buzzwords and explore how we can skew our approach to center the things that really matter.
