As we approach the end of the semester, the Writing Center is here to support students across disciplines as they work on final papers, presentations, and projects. Encourage students to visit us for help on everything from multimodal projects to lab reports and group projects.
Here are several points where you might encourage students to make appointments with us:
- After you introduce your final project assignment: encourage students to visit the Writing Center for a planning session. A tutor can read over the assignment description with the student and help them create an outline, brainstorm ideas, or just make sure they understand the prompt.
- To combat procrastination: encourage your students to make the most of their time by signing up for an accountability session. In these sessions, the writer works on their project while a tutor stands by to answer questions and keep the writer focused. This is great for students who have procrastinated a lot on previous projects, have trouble getting started or staying focused, or are balancing a lot of things at once.
- After students start writing: as students begin to draft their projects, it’s the perfect time to visit the Writing Center for a feedback session. In these sessions, the tutor and student will read over the draft together and talk about the writer’s questions, goals, and areas for improvement.
We can also serve as a complement to your classroom instruction. This is often the point in the semester when students ask for extra credit or to make up missed work. Consider offering Writing Center visits as one option for these students. Here is a sample prompt for an extra credit Writing Center visit, which you can modify for your courses. To help us best accommodate you, please contact us at writing@bsu.edu if you’re considering having a high volume of students visit the Writing Center.
