December 04, 2025

Teachers College & Educaitonal Studies invites education majors to strengthen their preparation with the Minor in Educational Studies and a new core course launching this spring: EDCU 231: School Curriculum. Watch a promotional video HERE

EDCU 231 introduces how curriculum is designed, aligned, and assessed—giving you practical tools for edTPA and for real classrooms. You will learn to plan instruction “with the end in mind,” develop essential questions, and build curriculum maps for a grade level or subject area.

Course format: synchronous online | Mondays, 6:30–9:10 p.m.

The Minor in Educational Studies (15 credits) is flexible and designed for education majors who want deeper insght in how schools, teaching, and learning works in our country. Many students can double-count up to six credits toward both their major and the minor.

Students may choose from four pathways:

  • Secondary Education: Secondary majors begin with EDFO 420 and may add the Curriculum and Instructional Leadership cluster, pairing EDCU 231 with EDST 370: Instructional Leadership in Schools. Recommended electives connect to typical secondary coursework such as EDSE 150 and EDPS 390, making it possible to build the minor using courses that already support the major.
  • Elementary Education: Elementary majors select EDFO 420 or EDST 100 and then choose a cluster aligned with their program, including Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instructional Leadership, or Multicultural Education. Courses such as ECYF 231, ECYF 250, MATH 331, SPCE 331, EDEL 100, and EDEL 244 may count toward both the major and minor depending on the student’s concentration.
  • Early Childhood Education: Early childhood majors combine EDFO 420 with a cluster such as Curriculum and Instructional Leadership, where EDCU 231 and EDST 370 are key courses. Recommended electives include ECYF 100, ECYF 231, ECYF 485, and EDPS 393, allowing students to build the minor without taking unrelated credits.
  • Special Education: Special education majors may use EDFO 420, SPCE 201, and SPCE 331 toward the minor, depending on cluster choice. Students can pair EDCU 231 with EDST 370 in the Curriculum and Instructional Leadership cluster or select options in Educational Technology and Multicultural Education that strengthen both teaching skill and equity-focused practice.

Program plans are available for Secondary, Elementary, Early Childhood, and Special Education majors showing how the minor fits into each degree path.
