Dr. Angela Stefanski Sabbatical Lecture

January 17, 2023

You’re invited to the next event in the 2022-2023 Teachers College Dean’s Lecture Series, which takes place on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, from 3-4 p.m., in TC 1008, where Dr. Angela Stefanski will be presenting: “Defining Places and Spaces: The Collective Work of Local NonProfit Literacy Initiatives.”

Charitable non-profit agencies have a long history of working within communities with the expressed goal of improving community literacy outcomes. What literacy looks like and how each organization carries out their goals is shaped, in part, by the ways non-profit organizers perceive and enact literacy in their own lives, as well as the visions and values of their funding partners. What is not always clear is how the communities are included in the design and enactment of this work. In this participatory study, Dr. Angela Stefanski describes what voices shape the work of local non-profit initiatives as they define and seek to positively impact literacy in the communities they serve.
