Digital Scholarship Series: Textual Analysis & Visualization

Text analysis has increasingly become an essential pillar of digital scholarship and academia. This workshop will introduce various "distant reading" techniques, discuss important applications, and highlight common misconceptions. Participants will learn the basic process for preparing text for analysis and will be introduced to Voyant, an online text mining platform.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Mapping & Spatial Visualization

"Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things." --Tobler's First Law of Geography. Maps can be informative, compelling, and revealing and are found in almost every discipline and field. This workshop will discuss the essential elements of mapping and spatial visualization in digital scholarship. We will introduce fundamental principles, discuss the role of the digital on mapping projects, and critique real-world examples. Additionally, we will outline multiple platforms for spatial visualization and analysis available at Ball State.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Beginning a Digital Project

In this workshop, attendees will gain an understanding of the process of starting and managing a digital project. We will discuss project management, establishing scope, identifying comparable projects, defining audience, and establishing goals. Attendees will also be introduced to the various resources provided by Ball State to support digital scholarship projects. 

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Introduction to Omeka

Are you interested in learning more about Omeka, online exhibits, and content management systems? In this workshop, we will discuss the foundational principles behind the Omeka platform, best practices, and how various organizations have used it. Attendees will also receive a tutorial walk-through of the platform, importing and organizing collections, exhibit building, additional plugins for expanded features, and other significant resources.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Copyright & Access

Copyright and access are critical components of digital scholarship. In this workshop, attendees will learn how copyright and access apply to digital scholarship in an academic setting. We will discuss the copyright of existing digital projects and define your rights as digital scholarship practitioners. We will address concepts including fair use, CC-BY, and others.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Digital Scholarship in the Classroom

In this workshop, attendees will learn about digital scholarship in the classroom. First, we will explore using existing digital scholarship in course readings, including examples. We will discuss various concepts, including digital native, literacy, and multiple learning styles. Then, we will look at digital scholarship production as a class assignment. Attendees will hear examples from other scholars and students about their experience with digital scholarship in the classroom and what advice they may give to others looking to incorporate it into future courses.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Network Analysis & Visualization

Network analysis is an essential tool in many disciplines and fields. It brings to light complex relationship patterns and provides a new perspective to research and scholarship. This workshop will discuss the foundational principles of network analysis, identify best practices, and provide compelling examples. We will also introduce attendees to digital tools to generate and analyze networks.

 

Digital Scholarship Series: Digital Scholarship & Publishing

Wednesday, November 9

In the final workshop of the series, we will explore the field of digital scholarship publication. We will discuss Ball State's resources for hosting and supporting digital scholarship publication, examples of digital scholarship publishing from select journals, and the use of informal platforms (example: DHNow). Finally, we will discuss longevity and legacy projects within digital scholarship and how best to manage projects with ongoing publishing.
