The Defense Science Study Group (DSSG) is a program of education and study that introduces outstanding science and engineering professors to the United States’ security challenges and encourages them to apply their talents to these issues. The program is directed by the nonprofit Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) and is sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Ball State has the opportunity to nominate two faculty to this two-year program that requires their members to devote approximately 20 days per year to DSSG activities. These sessions are broken up into two week-long sessions in the summer and two 3-day sessions each academic year. These sessions focus on defense policy, related research and development, and the systems, missions, and operations of the armed forces and the intelligence community. Selection is based on academic excellence, breadth of interests, references, consideration of discipline, and geographic distribution. Members of STEM and social and behavioral science are encouraged to apply.
Selection criteria are as follows:
- A faculty member in science (including social & behavioral), engineering, or related discipline
- Outstanding academic accomplishments and likely a future leader in their field
- Preferably within 15 years of their Ph.D.
- Must be a US Citizen in order to acquire security clearance
