Ball State Student Orientation Leaders and Family Orientation Leaders are undergraduate students currently enrolled at Ball State University. Both Student and Family Orientation Leaders support the on-campus first-year student summer orientation program that takes place from June 3rd-July 12th. During this time, orientation leaders educate incoming students and their family members about the student experience and help them transition into Ball State University. This includes answering questions about academics, student life, and wellness resources. Orientation Leaders embody Ball State’s Beneficence Pledge in their interactions with incoming students and their family members, seeking ways for everyone to feel welcome and respected on our campus.  

  • Leading new students and/or their family members in discussion groups.
  • Organizing, preparing for, and carrying out daily orientation activities and responsibilities.
  • Explaining academic expectations and university procedures.
  • Acquainting new students and family members with campus services and activities.
  • Answering a high volume of questions about Ball State University.
  • Orientation Leaders will work from June 3rd-June 21st and July 1st-12th excluding Federal Holidays. Evening work is required Monday night through Thursday night. Each week during June & July, Orientation Leaders will have time off on the weekends.  
  • Job Qualifications: Applicants must be currently enrolled Ball State University undergraduate students who plan to continue their studies at Ball State in Fall 2024. All applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and maintain that at the end of the 2024 spring semester. All skills-based requirements for this position are included during training, so no skills are required to apply. However, successful applicants will want to learn about Ball State University, support all incoming students and their guests (parents, family members, etc.), speak in group settings, and be a reliable team member.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with people of varying backgrounds.
  • Dependable, reliable, self-directed.
  • A desire to learn about Ball State University.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people.
  • Willingness to work as a team (team player).

Conditions of Employment for Student Orientation Leaders 

  • $12.00 per hour, up to 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, May 20 through July 12, except May 27, June 19, June 24 – 28, and July 4 – 5.
  • Free single room in a residence hall.  
  • Free weekday meals when University Dining is open, in the form of a $650 debit conference card.
  • Cannot enroll in any summer classes or workshops.
  • Must not hold additional weekday employment during summer orientation.
  • Must be available for training May 20 - 24 and May 28 – 31, from 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Must be available to complete an orientation leader meeting sequence from March through April (does not meet during finals week). Times and days of meetings will be decided upon hire, ensuring times and dates work with spring semester schedules. Ultimately, we will be meeting as an entire staff 4 or 5 different times throughout this period for two hours each time. Leaders will be paid for the meetings. 
     
  • Conditions of Employment for Family Orientation Leaders 
  • $12.00 per hour, up to 20 hours a week (with the potential of additional hours), Monday through Friday, May 20 through July 12, except May 27, June 19, June 24 - 28 and July 4 - 5.
  • Must be able to work morning hours, early afternoon and evening hours (exact times to be discussed during interview).
  • Free single room in a residence hall (optional).
  • Free weekday meals when University Dining is open, in the form of a $325 debit conference card.
  • Must be available for training May 20 - 24 and May 28 – 31, from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
  • Can enroll in summer classes or workshops. (It has been recommended maybe taking 1 – 2 classes as long as they fit around the Orientation schedule)
  • Must be available to complete an orientation leader meeting sequence from March through April (does not meet during finals week). Times and days of meetings will be decided upon hire, ensuring times and dates work with spring semester schedules. Ultimately, we will be meeting as an entire staff 4 or 5 different times throughout this period for two hours each time. Leaders will be paid for the meetings.
