Title:  Fostering Constructive Dialog in a Human-Computer Interaction Class

Presented By:  Paul Gestwicki, Professor of Computer Science at Ball State University

Abstract:  Any significant project worth pursuing is going to involve disagreements between individuals, and so it is important to learn how to disagree productively. This is important for Computer Science students and practitioners since not only will team members disagree about how to do some of the technical work, it is very likely that different users will disagree about what the problem even is.

In this presentation, Dr. Gestwicki will describe how these challenges can be framed and approached in undergraduate education. The particular context is an upper-level elective in the Computer Science curriculum, but the ideas are easily generalizable to other domains and topics. He will provide some examples of what leads to disagreement, such as cognitive biases and differences in moral foundations, and demonstrate classroom interventions that can be used to help students recognize, understand, and practice fruitful behaviors.

Bio:  Paul Gestwicki is a Professor of Computer Science at Ball State University. His professional interests include game design and development as well as Computer Science and multidisciplinary education.
