UPDATED: Computer Science Colloquium: "A Year of Fam Jams: Making Video Games During a Global Pandemic" Presented by Paul Gestwicki

April 16, 2021

Date: April 21, 2021

Time: 3:00 pm

Abstract:  The first round of lockdowns in March 2020 meant that a lot of plans had to change. Since my four boys, my wife, and I were stuck at home together, it seemed like a great time to try a "fam jam"---working together, in one day, to make an original video game. We worked hard and had a great time, so much so that the kids insisted we make it a monthly tradition. In this colloquium presentation, I will tell the story of how we created an original video game each month, from March 2020 to March 2021. I will talk about how we got started, what tools we used, and what my family learned throughout the year. I will also share some advice and opportunities for people who are interested in trying this themselves or in getting started with game design and development.
