Campus Water Remains Safe

April 08, 2026

Questions arose on campus Wednesday following reports in the Muncie community about an earthy or musty taste and odor in the water supply.

Ball State University’s Facilities Planning and Management leadership spoke directly with city officials and confirmed that water consumption on campus remains safe.

According to information shared publicly by Indiana American Water, the taste and odor issue is most often caused by naturally occurring environmental compounds and algae activity in surface water sources such as Prairie Creek Reservoir. The company stated that the water continues to meet all state and federal standards and that it has already begun adjusting its water treatment process and conducting additional sampling.
