Benjamin V. Cohen Peace Studies Grant
The call to submit Letters of Intent (LOI) for the Benjamin V. Cohen Peace Studies Grant is now open. This externally funded grant provides support to conduct basic or applied research on topics related to peace.
Eligibility: Ball State faculty members and graduate students are eligible to apply.
Awards of up to $50,000 are available to support one-year or multiple-year projects. The review committee will determine the number, type, and level of project funding. For faculty members, funds may be used for salary, supplies, expenses, and/or travel. For graduate students, funds may be used for an assistantship stipend, supplies, participant expenses, and/or travel.
Letters of intent (LOI) are required and due by 5:00 PM (EST) November 6th.
They should be emailed as a word document to peacecenter@bsu.edu. Applicants are encouraged to consult with their Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) Proposal Manager to assist with their LOI development. Those invited for a full proposal are required to work with SPA for proposal and budget development, and to obtain University approvals prior to the deadline of 5:00 PM (EST) on January 29, 2025 in accordance with the University’s External Proposal Submission Policy.
Proposal Topics: Proposals must contain a clear and concise discussion of the impact of the project on peace and must be congruent with the mission of the Cohen Peace Studies Grant. That is, how will your project expand knowledge and/or solve practical problems associated with issues affecting world peace to improve the human condition?
Projects that focus on aspects of structural violence, direct violence, and/or social justice are permissible. Other possible topics might include but are not limited to the following:
Poverty
Discrimination
Suicide prevention
Domestic violence and/or abuse
Bullying
Human Rights
Homelessness
Racism
Sexism
Unfair labor practices
At risk individuals
Sexual harassment
Community development/empowerment
Race relations
Ethnic/international relations
Relations between religious groups
Cultural understanding
Economic inequity or equality
Health disparities
Criminality
Crowding or overpopulation
Justice and reconciliation
Sports for development
Environmental issues
Ecosystems
Land use
Hydrology
Intensive farming

Projects that involve peace building, peacemaking, or peace keeping are consistent with the mission of the Cohen Fund.
