Dr. Kim Jones-Owen Faculty Development and Curriculum Fund in Women’s and Gender Studies

Applications for AY 2025-26 are due by December 1, 2024

The Women’s and Gender Studies program is the recipient of a generous endowed foundation fund from the former director, Dr. Kim Jones-Owen, which will support new course development, immersive pedagogies, and faculty conference participation.   A three-year pilot program is being launched in Fall 2024 to make monies from the fund available to Ball State faculty. The criteria for each area of funding are listed below.

Summer Faculty Course Development Fund ($3,000)

This fund is open to full-time, tenure-track or non-tenure line faculty; preference will be given to applicants who have not previously taught in or for Women’s and Gender Studies at Ball State:

  • Applicants will design a new iteration of WGS 310 (Special Topics) or WGS 410 (Feminist Theory), the latter pending program scheduling needs.
  • Applicants will have an opportunity for conversation and mentoring in the fall, as part of the application process; the due date for applications will be by December 1, 2024, and the chosen faculty will be notified in early February 2025, in advance of scheduling for the next academic year and of summer course planning.
  • Applicants must work with their respective Chair to arrange a course release to teach for Women’s and Gender Studies in the year for which they are applying.
  • Applicants may choose either fall or spring semester in which to offer their course.
  • Applicants will be asked to give a public talk on the theme of their course in the semester following the teaching of the course.

Applicants for the Course Development Fund should provide:

  1. a tentative syllabus for a new course, clearly stating the course rationale and providing a working bibliography and overview of course themes and modes of engagement.
  2. a letter from the home Department Chair or School Director stating support for the proposed new course and stating agreement that the expressed course will be taught during the expressed academic year
  3. a current CV

Faculty Experiential Education Fund (Up to $1000)

This fund is open to full-time, tenure-track or non-tenure line faculty; preference will be given to applicants who have a track record teaching for Women’s and Gender Studies at Ball State

  • Applications for the Experiential Education Fund may—but need not—be tied to an application for the Course Development Fund.
  • Applicants will have an opportunity for conversation and mentoring in the fall, as part of the application process; the final due date for the application will be by December 1, 2024, the chosen faculty will be notified the following February.
  • Applicants are encouraged to align their funding proposal with Ball State’s strategic priority on HIP courses, so that their course can be tagged as such. More information is here:  https://www.bsu.edu/about/administrativeoffices/vice-provost/student-services/high-impact-practices
  • Faculty may choose to pursue KJO funding as a complement to other Immersive Learning funding; if so, the application should reflect clear alignment with the specific criteria of Ball State’s Immersive Learning practices.

Applicants for the Experiential Education Fund should provide:

  1. a course syllabus (or proposed syllabus) with a clear description of the experiential/HIP (and/or “Immersive”) element in the course, and a rationale for its inclusion.

Items are to be submitted by email attachment to Dr. Sharon Jones, Chair of WGAS, at sharon.jones@bsu.edu by December 1, 2024.
