BSU-in study abroad program -- In search of faculty team for Rabat, Morocco AND Dublin, Ireland!

October 29, 2026
We're now accepting faculty interest for BSU-in Spring 2028, with two exciting destinations under consideration: Rabat, Morocco and Dublin, Ireland! We're looking for faculty from a variety of academic disciplines who are interested in teaching Ball State courses abroad while helping make international education more accessible to our students. Faculty are welcome to express interest in either destination or both.

What is BSU-in?
In short, BSU-in is a Study-Abroad-Office-directed, BSU-faculty-led, semester-long study abroad program. It emerges from a commitment to increasing student access, providing programs of the highest academic value, and keeping study abroad enrollments within the institution.

BSU students, BSU faculty, BSU courses, BSU prices – on a host campus abroad!

We know that students want to study abroad, but cost and academic relevance are among the biggest barriers. BSU-in addresses both of these concerns! Students pay approximately the same cost as an on-campus semester in Muncie – studying abroad does NOT cost extra! And the program features Ball State courses taught by Ball State faculty, with an emphasis on courses that satisfy University Core Curriculum requirements and appeal to students across a wide range of majors.
BSU-in also offers flexibility. Students can supplement their on-site coursework with an online course or two, making it possible for students from many different majors to spend a semester abroad without falling behind in their progress toward graduation.

What about teaching at BSU-in?
Faculty teach in BSU-in as part of their regular academic-year teaching assignments, with course loading determined collaboratively with their academic units. If there's a course your department offers that would be a good fit for BSU-in, you could be loaded to teach that course abroad instead of in Muncie.

As a rule of thumb, BSU-in offers a menu of 3–7 courses taught by a team of 2–4 faculty members. We aim to offer courses from a variety of disciplines, with preference given to those that fulfill Cardinal Core requirements. We can also consider non-UCC courses on a case-by-case basis.

Because we work collaboratively with departments, there's considerable flexibility in faculty loading. In previous BSU-in programs, for example:
  • One faculty member taught one 15-week BSU-in course and three additional courses online.
  • Another taught two BSU-in courses on a ten-week calendar and two courses online.
  • Another traveled abroad for a five-week course while completing the remainder of their teaching assignment in Muncie earlier in the semester.
Both full-semester and partial-semester placements are possible. We work together – Study Abroad, the faculty member, and the academic unit – to determine the best fit.

Who covers travel costs for BSU-in faculty?
Housing, flights, excursions, and ground transportation are covered by the program (Study Abroad). We also provide a modest allowance to assist with cost of meals abroad. Salary compensation remains through the academic unit. Because BSU-in courses are loaded as part of regular teaching assignments, faculty salaries remain unchanged.

How can I increase my chances of being selected for a BSU-in teaching team?
Faculty for BSU-in are selected collaboratively between Study Abroad and the academic units.
The most desirable candidates are faculty who can teach at least one Cardinal Core course – and even better if they can offer more than one! Courses with broad appeal across majors are especially valuable, as they help make the program accessible to more students. We can also consider non-core courses, particularly when offered alongside a core course.
We're especially interested in courses that can take advantage of the international setting, providing opportunities for students to connect their classroom learning with the cultures, communities, and experiences around them.
One of the most important factors in selecting courses and faculty is the enthusiastic endorsement of the Department Chair. We strongly encourage faculty to discuss the opportunity with their unit leader before formally indicating interest to Study Abroad.

BSU-in-Rabat, Morocco – Spring 2028
Morocco offers an extraordinary setting for intercultural learning, situated at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and the Arab world. Its rich history, linguistic diversity, and blend of cultural influences create opportunities for students to explore global connections through firsthand experience.
Rabat, Morocco's capital, combines historic architecture and traditional markets with contemporary cultural institutions, universities, and international organizations. As a center of government, education, and diplomacy, Rabat offers an especially compelling environment for coursework in communication, history, politics, language, business, the arts, and many other disciplines.
Students and faculty will have opportunities to experience Morocco's distinctive cultural traditions, explore the country's rich history, and engage with contemporary issues in a dynamic North African setting. Rabat offers an exciting environment for faculty interested in bringing an international dimension to their teaching.

BSU-in-Dublin, Ireland – Spring 2028
Ireland's capital offers a vibrant setting for international education, combining centuries of history and literary tradition with a dynamic contemporary economy and globally connected culture.
Dublin is home to renowned cultural institutions, historic landmarks, universities, and a thriving international business community. Its rich traditions in literature, music, politics, and the arts provide opportunities for experiential learning across a wide range of academic disciplines. From exploring Ireland's complex history and cultural identity to examining its role in contemporary Europe and the global economy, Dublin offers an abundance of opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.
BSU-in-Dublin launched in Spring 2026, and we're excited about the possibility of returning to Ireland and building on this program's foundation for future cohorts of Ball State students.

These locations or terms aren't right for me/my department, but I'm interested in BSU-in. Are other opportunities possible?
Absolutely! BSU-in locations change from semester to semester, and some destinations may recur depending on student and faculty interest. Since Fall 2024, BSU-in has offered programs in Puebla, Mexico; Alcalá de Henares, Spain; Dublin, Ireland; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Lincoln, United Kingdom; and Seoul, South Korea.
Faculty are welcome to indicate interest in future BSU-in opportunities at any time, even if the currently announced destinations or terms aren't the right fit. Keep in mind, though, that our current recruitment efforts are focused on Spring 2028.

What next?
Interested faculty are encouraged to discuss the opportunity with their Department Chairs and Ashley Coker, Director of Study Abroad (acoker@bsu.edu, 765-285-2652).
Then, please indicate your interest in teaching at BSU-in by completing this faculty interest form.
Faculty may express interest in Rabat, Dublin, or both destinations.
While we accept interest forms on a rolling basis for future terms, we encourage faculty interested in Spring 2028 to submit their forms by February 1st. Final program offerings and faculty teaching assignments will be developed collaboratively with academic units based on faculty interest, course offerings, and departmental support.
